Getting to know Sydney folk duo The Falls

Sydney folk duo The Falls tell us a bit about themselves:

The Falls are Simon (boy) and Melinda (girl). We write songs together. We used to be a couple. Then we broke up. Even though we broke up, we still enjoy writing songs, cooking pesto pasta together, paying each other out and eating burgers/tacos/pizza at 1am after gigs.

Our debut EP is called Hollywood. For almost two years we played every Wednesday night down at the Hotel Hollywood in Surry Hills (Sydney). When we began to put the songs together for the EP, it became clear how connected these songs were to the time we spent in that old hotel. When it came time to record, we really wanted to capture a little bit of Hollywood magic on every track. So, we recorded the reverbs for it down in the bowels of the Hotel by playing the tracks through a guitar amp into the men’s toilet. If you could smell reverb, our EP would smell pretty bad. We are calling it pee-verb.

Our tour will be littered with half-eaten toasted sandwiches. It’s the most consistent food item you can buy at airports and service stations. Actually… no, just airports. The most reliable food you can get from a service station is a meat pie. By the end of our tour with Passenger in August we will be able to tell you which airport in Australia makes the best toasted sandwich and whether or not Mike (from Passenger) is a morning person.

Sydney is home.
