The Standard Bowl opens its doors

On Wednesday night in Sydney, we were treated to the VIP launch of The Standard’s latest incarnation. The Standard Bowl. The ticketed live music venue has reinvented itself to become a commitment-free bar with a leisure-lounge, slacker, stick-around-for-four-hours-or-more kinda vibe.

As the doors opened up at 6pm the DJ spun a great selection of rock n roll tunes while guys and gals enjoyed Big Lebowski themed cocktails and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer while exploring what this new Americana playing field had to offer. Afterwards it was local Sydney country rockers Little Bastard who brought in the evening, in a highly energetic and raucously endearing fashion.

This new fit-out was replete with a killer downtown Brooklyn ghetto vibe with four mini bowling alleys as well as awesome 50’s rockabilly murals, a new stage, vintage pinball machines and video games. All these new activities on top of the venue’s refreshing new mantra that is simply: no more ticketed events, just Booze, Bands and Bowling. Now who doesn’t like the sound of that?

bowlingAs the night went on it was clear the renovations have done the music venue enormous favours as it was completely rammed and relentlessly fuelled by high and excitable spirits. We of course dominated the bowling alleys for the evening, showcasing our dismal talent with no shame at all as far as our recollections can serve us….

The concept behind this new renovation was initially lifted from the creme-de-la-creme of hipster villages that is Williamsburg New York, where resides the infamous and suitably-named parent venue, Brooklyn Bowl.

As a package with Lofi Bar and Jonny Wong’s delectable dumplings downstairs, the entire venue is an insanely good innovation offered towards Sydney nightlife. Particularly in light of the recent lock-outs it’s a really smart move to show certain night owls that there is more to going out then getting completely off chops as well.

Over the course of our weekend, now well and truly upon us, they are staging one hell of a three-day bender. We’ve already had Wolf and Cub and Palms. But never fear if you’ve missed them, as on Saturday evening (tonight!) you can see Jenny Broke the Window.

Oh, and did we mention it’s FREE!!! Yeah, we thought that might catch your attention.

Keep up to date with everything The Standard Bowl has got going on by following them on Facebook.
