Review: Dâm-Funk at Sydney Festival

Dam Funk by Jamie Williams-4’s Rhosian Woolridge gets funky in Hyde Park:

Within minutes of hitting the decks, Dâm-Funk transformed the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent into West Coast LA in the 1990s. “Where’s Snoop?” I thought. Alas, Snoop was no where to be seen. Just a bunch of cool dads wearing fedoras. Funk music don’t discriminate.

Having spent most of the decade playing alongside some of the G-funk greats as a session musician,Dâm-Funk is no stranger to the game. Now, almost seven years since releasing his solo debut Rhythm Trax, he is a groove king in his own right. The funk odyssey ebbed and flowed into the early hours of the morning, as Dam crooned his heart out over neo-boogie beats.

Even after signing to Stones Throw Records in 2007, Dâm-Funk has remained relatively low-key. “Man, I don’t wanna blow up” he says mid-set, over fat bass that vibrates through the room. In an industry where many are in constant pursuit of greatness, it’s a welcome treat. Dâm-Funk chuckles and says “I just wanna stay where I am, bro.” Dâm-Funk is LA’s best kept secret. His long, but largely backgrounded career hasn’t killed any of his vibes. It’s as if Dâm-Funk has been chillin’ on the sidelines, just super content making music that people can groove to.

By the end of his set, Dâm-Funk is surrounded by girls from the crowd, moving their hips to his floppy synth sounds and everyone is having a good get down. The crowd sings the words to We Continue back to him, in an ode to the endurance of the funk genre. “Should I play one more song?” Dâm-Funk asks before imparting one last bit of wisdom before we all glide into the night. “Nah, nothing can top that. Sometimes you gotta know when to stop”.
