Getting to know Fractures

Fractures, the moniker of Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist Mark Zito, has recently dropped his new track ‘Lowcast’ from his highly-anticipated debut album, Still Here. He’ll be playing some shows in February. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am… well, thank you. I’m also named Mark, but go by Fractures for some reason. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then again, so did the mullet. So hey. It’s all cyclical.

Lowcast is… Australia’s unofficial nation anthem. It’s a sad song, but then again, all of my songs are so that’s a bit redundant. I wrote it down on the Mornington Peninsula at my manager’s family holiday house. I was on my own and fairly isolated which is my ideal situation a lot of the time, and out it came. I’d say it’s about putting things off and hoping a bad situation will sort itself out rather than solving it. It applied to a specific situation but I wrote it from a broader perspective.

My debut album is… Australia’s unofficial national album. It’s titled ‘Still Here’ and it’s a mixed bag. Stylistically, that is. It’s all good quality. It strays a bit from the typical pop song format I have become so well known and loved for, but that’s not to its detriment. It’s all a bit more personal this time around, I’ve gotten better at writing about what I know rather than leaning on other people’s problems as stimulus. Turns out it’s easier to write that way too.

My upcoming tour will be… brief but (hopefully) memorable. Five-piece band of A-Grade musos. Five minutes or so of C-Grade in-between song patter.

Home is… Melbourne. AND THE MCG – THE HOME OF FOOTBALL.

I spend too much time… feeding and clothing the city’s stray dogs.

It might surprise people to learn that… I often exaggerate or fabricate stories regarding what I spend my time doing. Also I enjoy drinking milk.

In the future… I hope to have amassed a hero’s fortune from my musical work and hope to be remembered for my debut album and everything that will follow it.

Fractures will be playing at the following venues in February:
Fri, Feb 17 | Brightside, Brisbane
Sat, Feb 18 | Newtown Social Club, Sydney
Fri, Feb 24 | Howler, Melbourne
