Interview: Allah-Las smell the roses

Excitingly, Allah-Las are set to hit Australia for the first time this May! We grabbed a quick chat with Matthew Correia from the band:

You’re finally coming to Australia. What was the hold up?
We wanted to, it just hadn’t worked out until now. Not all decisions are ours for the making. That’s how these things work I guess.

Were you surprised by the response by Australian fans to the tour?
We really didn’t know what to expect. We’re honored. I just wish we we’re staying longer and seeing more places.

Do you have any touristy plans while you’re in the country?
I hope we have the time to see the sights, smell the roses, meet a koala or two, worship the sun.

Australian band Babe Rainbow toured with you around the States. What’s your understanding of the psych rock/garage scene in Australia?
The Babe Rainbow are the homies. We’re not really concerned with scenes or genre labels. Those are terms for critics and journalists.

What Australian bands, past or present, do you consider as influences on your music?
There’s an underground artist we’ve been listening to recently from Perth called Dugan Gnash. Just demos so far and no social media yet, but look out for him.

You’ve previously described [second album] Worship the Sun as an ode to Los Angeles. How would you describe [latest LP] Calico Review?
I think that was written about the album but not by us. It’s really not for us to describe. Our records and songs mean something to us but we want it to be up to the listener’s interpretation.

What’s next for the Allah-Las after this tour?
Playing some shows in Asia, West coast of America, Europe…
