Getting to Know Patrick Wilson

Melbourne singer/songwriter Patrick Wilson recently dropped his new single, ‘Nobody’. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am Patrick Wilson. I am 24-years-old and originally from the Victorian town of Geelong. I’m an alt-country singer-songwriter and I am now based in Melbourne. Prior to pursuing music I was working as a butcher and I absolutely hated it. Now I’m playing music and I love it. I teach music lessons at a few primary schools in Melbourne and it’s a real honour getting to impart some of my knowledge. I know I still look up to music teachers/mentors I’ve had in the past.

‘Nobody’ is a love song I wrote while listening to far too much Van Morrison last summer. I really wanted to capture that combination of country and groove that he seems to nail every time. We got some great horn players in – Gianni Marinucci and Paul Williamson to record and give it that extra sense of the 70’s.

My show at Coburg’s Post Office Hotel on August 27 will be fun! We’ll be playing all the songs off the record, live in full band mode. It’s been a long time coming writing, recording and now releasing this EP so it’s such an exciting time being able to show everyone what I’ve been working on. I’ll be performing with my band, ‘The Bare River Queens’.

Home is a very dilapidated house in Preston that is slowly sinking into the ground. It has its quirks but is home nevertheless. I live with my very good friends of which I make music with and there is always the sound of someone playing some sort of instrument 24/7. When I’m not here, I’m back at my family home out on a surf-coast farm in Geelong. It’s nice being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne sometimes.

I spend too much time playing Clash of Clans and watching terribly wonderful cheesy TV shows. Unsure why I enjoy ‘Clash Of Clans’ so much.. Good chance to relax the mind I suppose.

I’ve never been overseas. So that is definitely on the to do list. I think going to the USA next year will be the first stop across the water.

It might surprise people to learn that I am actually a championship winning surfer. I grew up in Torquay and would enter surfing competitions and somehow win them. I used to surf a lot with my dad back in the day. Was great fun. I am also a drummer for several bands in the country music scene here in Melbourne.

In the future I’m going to buy a van and travel around Australia as a touring musician.
