Something You Said’s top songs of 2017

It’s that time when our contributors choose their favourite things from 2017. Here are our favourite songs of the year, as selected by our team, in no particular order:

STELLA DONNELLY – Boys Will Be Boys

Stella Donnelly (pictured, above) describes this song as, “My attempt at making sense of society’s tendency to blame the victims of sexual assault and rape and make excuses for the perpetrators. It was also my way of dealing with certain events that were occurring in my life at the time… A song is just a song but at the very least I hope it will open up difficult yet important conversations between family members, friends, government bodies, organisations and most importantly, boys and men.”

ALEX THE ASTRONAUT – Not Worth Hiding

If there was a song that Australia could have done with soundtracking its 2017, it was Alex The Astronaut’s beautiful and timely paean to self-acceptance. Bobby Townsend

ELBOW – Magnificent (She Says)

STEVE LACY – Dark Red

Made on an iPhone this is the sound of 50 years of soul & R&B condensed into three minutes of hook-laden magic. Each part of this track would make a better chorus than any other pop song released this year. Just as you think you’ve heard the best bit of the song it hits you with another hook and then another. When Lacy gets round to dropping an album on his own, people better watch out. Neil Martin

WOLF ALICE – Delete The Kisses

SINK YA TEETH – If You See Me

For all it’s simplicity it has a bass line that funks it’s way through all 4 minutes 50 seconds and congas/claps which get the head nodding. never before has a song about feeling sorry for yourself got this old man moving around his imaginary dance floor in such a dramatic fashion. Post-punk meets dance music in a way that i never realised it could. Dylan Hibbert

TOKIMONSTA – Rose’s Thorn

THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN – War On Peace

POND – 30000 Megatons

THE HORRORS – Something to Remember Me By
