Something You Said’s top podcasts of 2017

There were some cracking podcasts for us to plug into our ears last year. Here are the top ten of 2017, as voted for by our team of contributors:

1. DIRTY JOHN

A strange and captivating six-part podcast series that delves into the bizarre world of a strange man (pictured, above) who seduces, manipulates and psychologically destroys the women around him by assuming multiple identities and concealing a history that will raise eyebrows. Melissa Barrass

2. S-TOWN

From the team that brought you Serial, this was a similarly engaging journey into the strange world of John B. McLemore.

3. THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST

He added one more podcast to the giant podcast bin, now you have plucked that podcast out and started listening. He took his microphone and found some human folk, and he recorded all the noises while they spoke…

4. INVISIBILIA

Invisibilia, an offshoot of This American Life, explores the intangible forces that shape human behaviour—things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. Fascinating stuff.

5. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

In simple terms, Jon Ronson’s podcast is all about Pornhub’s effect on the porn industry. But, as the title suggests, the ripples were large and spread a long, long way. Bobby Townsend

6. RABBITS

The blurb for the Rabbits goes thusly…. “When Carly Parker’s friend Yumiko goes missing under very mysterious circumstances, Carly’s search for her friend leads her headfirst into a ancient mysterious game known only as Rabbits. Soon Carly begins to suspect that Rabbits is much more than just a game, and that the key to understanding Rabbits, might be the key to the survival of our species, and the Universe, as we know it.” Intrigued? You jolly well should be.

7. ALL THE BEST

All the Best is an Australian weekly radio show and podcast. It is a breeding ground for Australia’s best storytellers and audio documentarians. Each episode is based loosely around a central theme. It can take you anywhere and every story is told in a different way. Jayne Cheeseman

8. THE DOLLOP

Always good for a laugh, if you always wanted to know how ridiculous the story and history of heroin is and how it ties into the world of legal drug dealing, listen to the episodes ‘Opium in the US’. If you want a funny account of all kinds of historical events and character this is a good place to start. Damon Collum

9. ATHLETICO MINCE

It’s a football podcast in the loosest sense of the term, as Bob Mortimer and Andy Dawson ramble magnificently and hilariously about Steve McLaren’s hair island, Gangs of the EPL, Barry Homeowner and, of course, brass hands. Bobby Townsend

10. KERMODE AND MAYO’S FILM REVIEW

Hello to Jason Isaacs.
