Tropfest is here for your entertainment

Hey Sydneysiders!

If you’re looking for a great night out this Saturday 17th of Feb then head out west to Tropfest which is happening again this year at The Crescent – Parramatta Park. Slap on the bug spray, pick yourself a spot on the grass, and relax by watching short films under the stars at this free event thanks to CGU Insurance (score!)

Tropfest is a well known Aussie event which started with humble beginnings in ’93 in Sydney’s Tropicana Caffé. From ol’ mate John Polson running the event as a screening for family and friends, it has become one of Australia’s iconic cultural events on the Australian film calendar and puts both up-and-coming filmmakers and Western Sydney on the map. This is testament to the fact that Tropfest has grown and no doubt will get bigger and better each year.

It’s a pretty impressive lineup this year with the 16 finalists presenting their films to the Tropfest crowd and jury which includes Emmy-nominated filmmaker Garth Davis (Lion), BAFTA-nominated Aussie documentarian Jennifer Peedom (Mountain), Logie award-winning Indigenous actor Rob Collins (Cleverman) and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon who will be coming to Sydney for Tropfest 2018.

There’s also heaps of stuff happening in Parramatta from TropTalks which is on right now (Tues to Friday nights, 6:30pm) at Western Sydney University to TropJnr held at Event Cinemas, Parramatta this Saturday from 10am, to the big event itself: Tropfest 2018 with screenings starting at dusk in Parramatta park.

TropTalks, held at Western Sydney Uni’s Parramatta city campus brings together industry guests to discuss and debate topics relevant to the screen industry from advancements in filmmaking, discussions on genre, Indigenous storytelling, and ideas on bringing stories to life. The intimate setting means seats are limited and there’s a small cost for these night talks, so get in quick if you want to attend. Plus, if you’re a Western Sydney University Student there’s a 25% discount on tickets to these talks. Nice.

Tropfest 2018 is going to be a big this year, being broadcast live on ABC COMEDY and YouTube from 8pm and hosted by Zan Rowe (Double J Mornings) and comedian Susie Youssef (The Chaser’s Media Circus). There’s also a special guest performance by Tim Minchin happening as well on the night plus pre-screening entertainment including Cumbiamuffin and Thandi Phoenix to get everyone pumped for the night ahead.

So bring your cheese and crackers, BYO booze or head over to Tropfest Food Village an area in the park that’s selling some grub for you to sink your teeth into on the night cause it’ll be grand. Food + Flicks = Fun.
