Bridie Connell & Brian Chase Collaborate
It’s great when mates collaborate. So we’re pretty bloody excited to learn that one of our favourite artists, Bridie Connell, is teaming-up with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ drummer Brian Chase on a piece called St Teresa Swoon. The artwork is an 8-minute filmed performance with classic burlesque fans to Chase’s track, Fire Drone.
The title is a reference to Bernini’s sculpture Ecstasy of St Teresa and the performance is a play on divine (ie. religious) and induced states of ecstasy brought on by music, dance, meditation, sex etc. Connell’s simplified, repetitive dance draws from classic burlesque, embracing the roles of the seductress and seduced, saint and spear, armed with a pair of flaming fans and oblivious to the bustling construction site behind her.
Connell explains: “Brian sent me a couple of demos and we’ve worked from there. The music is part of his solo project Drums & Drones which goes ‘inside’ the sound of a drum, using the principles of Just Intonation to expose the multitude of frequencies within a single drum hit. I think of them as meditative soundscapes. The track I went with is dubbed Fire Drone and I’d originally planned on making an installation but the track took me in a different direction.”
The Aussies amongst you can see Bridie Connell’s exhibition, which makes up part of a collaborative programme, at Artereal Gallery in Sydney (747 Darling Street, Rozelle). Featuring nine artists, nine days and nine exhibition openings, the gallery will be open to the public every day from 3pm-9pm with the official opening for each project being held daily between 6pm-9pm.
