Interview: Getting to know Sofala
We are… Sofala, a seven-piece from Melbourne, and have spent far too much indoors through Winter; bouncing between our houses, rehearsal rooms and the entrails of pubs and clubs of our beloved city. We love record stores and are constantly inspired by the underground. We like to observe the world through a cynical lens, but generally are quite positive people. We don’t believe in daylight savings, and are grateful for the sun and moon alike. We are insecure about our work, but believe in the power of music and self-expression.
Confetti Dreams is… a song and video that really helped push us into a direction we wanted to be creatively. It was a song inspired sonically by our Swedish heroes Dungen. The lyrics derive from Herman Hesse’ psychedelic, manic observer the Steppenwolf. It was recorded mostly live to tape at our friend’s home studio by the crazily wonderful Andrew Richards.
Our upcoming EP will be… a marker of where we were at as a project at a certain point of time. It is a collection of songs that highlight our live sound and reflect where we are at as a band: that is, playing shows week after week at pubs, clubs and house parties.
We spend too much time… speaking absolute nonsense to another, this is the result of spending too much time confined to small spaces. Sometimes we go hours on end speaking in tongues that we start to actually understand what we are saying even when we are not making any sense at all. Some of us smoke too much, others spend too much time reading memes. We all have our nasty habits.
It might surprise people to learn that… we only had 11 minutes of 16mm film to create the video for Confetti Dreams, as that is all we could afford.
We’ve never… released a record before.
In the future… we will begin to comprehend the damaging effects of climate change. Gender will not exist. Race will be a myth. Music will be automated .
