Interview: Getting to know Pearl
Pearl is a 22 year old singer songwriter from Sydney, who has just dropped her debut single. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… Pearl. Formal titles include… Pearl Herbert, Pearl Harbour, Pearl Jam, Pearly P and one time in high school, Pearl Necklace. I am 22, from Sydney, Australia.
I Hate You is… the title of my new single. It all started with the line ‘there’s a space between my arms, when the morning comes and I’m disarmed’. The song practically wrote itself from there. Its about honesty, resentment, putting your pride aside and the wondrous dance between friendship and lovers. As you can probably tell by listening to the song, I am painfully honest. I write what I know.
My upcoming live show will be… at the Robin Hood Hotel in Sydney on October 11th. It is our first gig together! The band consists of Henry Manuel (guitar), Zeppelin Hamilton (bass), Jeremy Ford (guitar), Elias Vilches (drums) and me on the keys/vocals. I’m very excited!
Home is… where the giraffe print sheets are and my dog Rain is always sneaking onto them. I live in Tamarama, and I’m very lucky to have a gorgeous view of the ocean.
I spend too much time… at the puppy park. You know when you get to the end of a long strenuous day and you just want to have a drink and put your feet up. Well, before I pour myself a whiskey I take rain to the puppy park. I must quickly paint a picture for you. Rain is 12 and a rescue. She has absolutely no interest in playing with other dogs. So really she takes me to the park to play with the pups while she entertains herself for an hour or so.
I never… thought I’d have a body of work that I could say I’ve written entirely on my own. 15 songs done and dusted, ‘I Hate You’ is only the beginning. I think it’s important to write with other people, it’s how you grow but it’s also vital to not be stifled by other people’s opinions when you’re telling your own story. That’s the point of my music. That’s how I can relinquish my perfectionist tool and in the wise words of The Beatles… let it be. At this stage I’d like to thank Dan Mac from Art vs. Science who produced my music with me. That guy is gold.
It might surprise people to LEARN that… I dropped out of school. Haha. Let me go again. It might surprise people to learn that… I’m a voiceover actor and actress as well as musician. Hmmmm, That might bore your brains out. If that’s the case, I’ll go again. It might surprise people to learn that… I eat kiwi fruit with the skin on, I drink Berocca but I think it’s stupid, when I was 4 years old I swear I breathed under water but it only happened once, I think folding toilet paper is time consuming and last but not least… Love is a battlefield, so always salt your pasta, and smile so the world smiles back.
I’m also… full of cheesy quotes and shitty dad jokes.
