Getting to know Franko Gonzo

Franko Gonzo (otherwise known as Francesca Gonzales), has dropped her debut single and video, Planet. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… right now, sitting in my parked thrifty work van, on lunch break, sushi in hand, laptop on passenger seat, pumping pop bangers, in-between picking up props for a film. lol what is my life? For context – I work in film, making and buying props to fund my music career, it’s a pretty funny job, but a just for now job 😉

Planet is… a song about having a crush on someone that already is taken. When I was writing it I was sad, and I was daydreaming what it would be like if they were my lover, in my world (my planet). It could come across as me trying to steal him from her, but I wanted to hold space for the sadness you feel when you have a special connection with someone, but they can’t be yours and you can’t help having feelings for them/want them to be yours. BUTTTT, this song ended up being a celebration of my world/my planet. And thinking about how SICK my world is, how rad my friends are etc made me realise that I have a great life and anyone would be lucky to be a part of it. Wanting people to look at their own lives and see the things you have rather than the things you can’t have.

Home is… MY FAVOURITE PLACE in the world, it’s THE BEST. I live in an all girls house in Northcote, Melbourne and it’s the sickest house ever!!! We call it “Girl Mansion”, and it has trimmings on the walls that look like vaginas. My painter housemate Freda and I have sat in our kitchen for hundreds of hours in lockdown listening to demos, coming up with photoshoot ideas, video clip ideas and birthed what this project “Franko Gonzo” is all about! I’m so excited it’s out in the world now, and people can see what we came up with/the start of a BIG year for “Franko Gonzo” woooo!

I spend too much time… watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians, I’m fully addicted, it’s my guilty pleasure. But also, it’s actually a really good show, who would have thought 😛

I’ve never… had a threesome but I’m really keen to try hehe.

The last couple of years have been… really special actually! Even though it was so bleak, there were some amazing things that came of it!! I was able to stop for a second, take a breather, step away from the grind, retreat into my own creative cocoon and figure out exactly what this project “Franko Gonzo” is all about. I got to write a million songs over zoom with people all over the world, meet some amazing internet collaborators and refine it into something that I’m so proud of. I got to build an amazing mostly femme creative team around me. Its my best work to date and I’m SO excited to show you all the other things I have in store for you!!

Keep up to date with Franco Gonzo here.
