Getting to know Mac The Knife
Eora/Sydney-based post-punk quintet, Mac the Knife, have just released their new tune, Labour In Vain. We asked them to tell us about themselves:
I am… Bryn Chapman Parish (Mac the Knife frontman) the easiest way to remember how to say Bryn is that it’s like “Bin” but with an “R” at the front.
‘Labour in Vain’ is… a song about coming to terms with my anxiety, which mainly manifests in mind reading in social situations. “Did I embarrass myself last night? That person definitely hates me. I bet they’ll never forget that I…”
It’s an anthem to try and break down my expectations of people’s opinions and to try and let them relinquish their hold over me.
Our upcoming live show will be… on October 28th at The House of Music and Booze to launch ‘Labour in Vain’. It’s a brand-new venue with an excellent band room, so we’re stoked to be playing there. The guys from the Music & Booze co have been so supportive over the years, so it feels right to be launching our baby in their new venue.
At a live show, you should expect… how much we pride ourselves on them. I feel most at home while performing on a stage. I find the energy of the performer crowd dynamic intoxicating, and it’s that electric dynamic that we strive to elevate and create for our performances.
Home is… wherever my family is. Blood relatives or chosen family it doesn’t matter. When I’m surrounded by those I love, home can be anywhere.
I spend too much time… on the gram. It’s my biggest pet hate. I’m so conscious of how my attention span is being negatively impacted by social media and yet I am still so addicted. But I’m working on it. There’s a brilliant book by Johan Haari called ‘Stolen Focus’ if you’re interested in learning more about how our attention span is receding.
I’ve never… not fallen asleep in a movie.
If I was an animal, I’d be a… racoon. For sure. Love those lil’ guys.
It might surprise people to learn that… Mac the Knife’s drummer Jonny and I have known each other since we were three years old at daycare. Besties ever since.
