Music video: Jim Bob, Dream Come True

I find it absolutely bewildering that people still bother watching The X Factor. In the early days, riding in the slipstream of Pop Idol, it was a moderately entertaining talent contest. People would take part with the aim of winning. At rapid speed though, it has deconstructed and destroyed music. Now, it’s not even about who wins. As soon as you get on the show, you’re a star, for five minutes. And that’s what it’s all about. Fame. Not creating great music. It’s about narratives involving sob-stories, in-fighting, flounces and all manner of other dramas that are just as constructed as any mediocre soap opera. The music is incidental.

Which, in a roundabout way brings us to the point. Jim Bob, of Carter USM and Jim Bob fame, is back with a brand new single, Dream Come True, about this very subject and the general state of the music biz. A new song from the Londoner is very exciting because, these days, it seems Jim is more of an author than a musician, with his novels Storage Stories and Driving Jarvis Ham gaining him plenty of acclaim. Doubly exciting is that the tune is lifted from an upcoming album – his first in four-and-a-half years. A new Jim Bob album = Hooray.

Dream Come True is typically forthright in its swipe at Cowell et al and comes complete with a really rather ingenious video clip, created by Jim and his old buddy Les Carter.

You can download the single here, pre-order the album here and, if you’re in the UK, you can check Jim out in a very special one-off show at London’s Bush Hall on November 30th. Tickets are on sale this Friday.
