OFF Festival’s must-see acts
Somethingyousaid.com’s Lisa Says is already looking forward to the Off Festival. Here she shares her very own selection of must-see acts:
Already in its eighth edition, Off Festival takes place the first three days of August in Katowice, Poland. From the very beginning, the focus of the festival lies much more in presenting still unknown, yet-to-come groups and experimental music. The artists of tomorrow share the stage with the legends from the past. This year, there will be heroes like Slowdive, Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500), Belle and Sebastian, Glenn Branca, The Notwist and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Clearly, they shouldn’t be missed. But what about the less well-known names?
Nisennenmondai
This Tokyo-based all-female instrumentalist trio plays danceable math-noise that reminds sometimes of Swans, Battles, Neu! and others. They will play Sunday at the Experimental Stage at 20:45. Yeah!
Deafheaven
Shoegazy post-metal – fast, intense, atmospheric, driven. This kind of music can never be completely understood just from recordings, so it should definitely be seen live! They will play Saturday at 19:30 at the mBank stage.
Wolf Eyes
Noise! Noise! Noise! Their label, Sub Pop – which is involved in the creation of the festival – says that they declared nuclear war on music. That describes the sound pretty well.
Your date is very early Saturday, at half-past midnight, on the Experimental stage.
Michael Rother presents the music of Neu! And Harmonia
If you are familiar with Krautrock and experimental music, then you might know the name Michael Rother, but for sure Neu! and Harmonia ring many bells. If not, there might be this scene from Portlandia happen to you quite soon:
So you’d better go and see him. Friday, 10 pm, Forest stage.
Amen Dunes
Amen Dunes will play a pre-festival show in a Jazz-Club in Katowice at the 31st of July. Their psychedelic lo-fi-noise-fuzz will be the perfect start to the festival! And even better, they are followed by Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500), which I can only recommend to see. Many times. Always.
Tickets for Off Festival are still available. Visit the Off website for more information and we’ll see you there.
