EP Review: Jesse Davidson – Lizard Boy

Jesse Davidson is yet another incredible Australian musical talent, and has just released a brand new EP, titled Lizard Boy.

The five-track recording is well thought out and a concise collection of tracks which all show off the depth and complexity of Davidson’s musical talent.

Opening track ‘Laika’ is an absolute jam that is that a perfect combination of chill and soul. The melody is one of those catchy-as-fuck tunes that gets stuck in your head. It’s the perfect highlight of the control the Adelaide-based artist has over his vocals. He’s a unique blend of sweet, husky and, let’s face it, a little bit sexy.

As the longest track of the bunch, ‘Darling’ is an interesting, and almost experimental sound that features a more paired back melody, with a prominence of bass guitar. It works well to, once again, show off the complexity and depth, including a welcomed and beautiful instrumental break right towards the end of the track.

You can notice a slight change in sound as ‘Chapel Choir’ opens with scratchy guitar strings, and a folkier feel. At first, it seems a little out-of-place, however upon further listening, the track acts more like an interlude and is above all just a way for the 19-year-old to prove that he is a talented artist with the ability to adapt his own style to different musical styles.

‘Lagoon’ jumps into a more electronic, synth sound which works well in this track in particular as Davidson’s echoing and soothing vocals hover above effortlessly throughout.

The most interesting track, however, comes right at the closing with ‘Will You Find Me’. It begins softly, drifting along beautifully, creating an ethereal trance. It’s seemingly one of those tracks that would easily induce sleep; a single guitar and Davidson’s incredibly magical voice.

Suddenly there’s a jolt and the track takes on a thunder of drums and a previously unfelt wave of dynamic passion. It’s the perfect, triumphant effort to a very strong EP.

All in all, Jesse Davidson’s Lizard Boy is an easy-listening five tracks which gives you a well-rounded idea of what this young artist can do.
