Something You Said’s top TV shows of 2015
Somethingyousaid.com’s end of year review is heading towards its conclusion. We’ve already told you what the best albums, films and songs were from the last 12 months. Here are the ten most entertaining TV shows, as voted for by our contributors:
SOMETHING YOU SAID’S TV SHOW OF 2015 IS: BETTER CALL SAUL
Having provided light relief in Breaking Bad, Saul Goodman was deservedly awarded his own spin-off show, which was unsurprisingly sharp and witty. Similarly unsurprising was the fact that it was as aesthetically pleasing as the show from which it was spawned. The cinematography, editing and music were fantastic, and kept the narrative moving at pace. Equally exciting for fans of Breaking Bad was the inclusion of Mike, many people’s favourite character. It’s no surprise that Better Call Saul, which started pleasingly enough, really moved up to the next level in episode six, when we got into the guts of Mike’s backstory. As a character, he is also worthy of his own spin-off and, for much of Better Call Saul, it feels as though he has one. Roll on season two. Words by Bobby Townsend
2. THIS IS ENGLAND 1990
3. PEEP SHOW SEASON 9
The El Dude brothers returned for one last season and typically, the flatmates lurched from one almighty personal disaster to the next. Most of your favourite characters appear in this final hurrah, including Superhans, Dobbie and Johnson. Oh, and Jeff and Soph are there too. There’s no Nancy or Big Suze, but Peep Show nerds were pleased to see the return of April. And Partridge enthusiasts might recognise Sidekick Simon too. Do Mark and Jez find love and inner peace in these last six episodes and live happily ever after? What do you think? Bobby Townsend
4. MAD MEN: THE FINAL SEASON – PART 2
After eight years, Mad Men wrapped up the second half of its final season. Tumbling out of the 60s and into the early 70s, each episode delves deeper in plot and the characters’ development grows further. You begin to wonder how on earth Mad Men creator Matt Weiner could possibly wrap up this almost decade-long series. The answer is: perfectly. This final series is full of ‘fuck yeah!’ moments, decadent retro stylings and every beloved character gets a fitting final farewell. Jayne Cheeseman
5. FARGO SEASON 2
6. VIKINGS
An interesting series but I found this third season nowhere near as exciting as season one or two. I rather enjoyed Vikings when Paganism was prevalent and there was sacrifices, orgies, character relationships, young love (Björn and Porunn), drinking, chants and gods etc. Season three is inundated heavily with Christian rulers from England and France, with Ragnar and Rollo striking deals left right and centre, exchanging their faiths for riches and land in the name of curiosity. Christianity has a knack for ruining beautiful cultures, doesn’t it? Melissa Barrass
7. GAME OF THRONES SEASON 5
8. SHOW ME A HERO
Absolutely gripping HBO mini series based on the book by Lisa Belkin and written for TV by David Simon (The Wire) and journalist William F. Zorzi. This brilliantly understated drama stars The Force Awakens’ Oscar Issac as a young politician, grappling with ambitions of power and consciousness involved in social housing in 1980’s New York. Beautifully written and acted, a must see. Gary Page
9. HUMANS
Whearas most of my top 10 this year is new seasons of already well established shows, Humans was a brand new original series which kept viewers glued the entire way through. Brilliant acting from the “Synths” and a very realistic portrayal of a potential future that we are not too far removed from. Here’s looking forward to season two. 25ThC
10. WORKAHOLICS
Workaholics is hands down one of my favourite television shows to date. Every season has something else to offer and those boys are straight up comedic geniuses and probably a little bit not right in the head. All in all it makes for good television, there’s nothing better than watching a group of friends create something that you’d know they be doing anyway, and turn into art that they’re getting paid for. True character; can’t wait to see what those guys do next. Travis Jordan
