FBi’s Dance Class returns in 2016!

FBi Dance Class

Heads up ladies… FBi’s Dance Class, supported by V MoVement, is back! Yup, FBi’s DJ skills and mentoring initiative is here once again and female dance music lovers can apply to be involved now.

For the uninitiated, here’s the history lesson. FBi’s Dance Class is a unique, comprehensive programme designed to discover, train and mentor a new crop of female talent in the electronic music industry. It matches emerging female mixers with established mentors operating as figureheads of the Sydney scene.

FBi Radio’s Managing Director Clare Holland told us, “It’s hard to ignore the gender imbalance when it comes to women in electronic music. FBi’s Dance Class is our attempt to do something about it. More women visible as DJs and producers means that other young women will see this as a possible pathway for them.”

FBi Radio is an institution in its own right and has been championing female talent behind the microphone and behind the decks since forever. Some of Australia’s most respected DJs, including Anna Lunoe (Beats 1 Radio) and Nina Las Vegas got their start at the station. FBi’s Dance Class had a hugely successful launch in 2015, kick-starting the careers of Lauren Hansom, our old mate SPORTS (Maddy Carr), Genie (Genevieve Collier), Ellie Locke and Mirã Bõru (Tess Nicolaou).

FBi Radio has also recently partnered with Music NSW on their Women in Electronic Music events for Vivid Sydney. Following a sold out panel discussion on the 18th of June, the closing night event co-presented by FBi Click will feature a sample of some of Australia’s most impressive female electronic artists including Banoffee, Rainbow Chan, GL, Habits, BUOY and Mira Boru (FBi’s Dance Class 2015 Alumni) on the MCA rooftop.

Four trainees will be selected to participate in a series of master classes delivered by FBi Radio presenters and alumni including DJs Andy Garvey (Sunset with Future Classic DJs), Adi Toohey (Sunset) and Kali (Picnic on FBi Click), and FBi’s Program Director Caroline Gates. These workshops will cover DJing with CDJs and Serato, mixing vinyl, radio presenting, music business and more.

Trainees will each be paired with an FBi mentor who they’ll join on-air over the course of a month.
The participants will then helm their own radio show in a residency on FBi’s dance music station,
FBi Click. Dance music needs a dance floor, so the trainees will make their live debut with a party
at FBi Radio on October 19.
