Lisa Mitchell’s travelling playlist
Happy Lisa Mitchell week, everyone! She releases her third studio album, Warriors, today and, following on from sharing a photo diary with us on Tuesday, now she puts together a playlist of songs that keep her going while travelling:
Deep Water – The Middle East
I spent a lot of time driving up and back from Melbourne to a farm I was working on a few years ago. The Middle East’s I Want That You Are Always Happy (sadly also their final album before they broke up) was the CD I was always fumbling in the car-door for.
I Forget Where We Were – Ben Howard
I love this whole album. I’d easily drive from Melbourne to Sydney with this guy.
Coffee – Sylvan Esso
I just wanna pull in at the next little town… I kinda feel like a… Coffee…?
Hadestown – Anais Mitchell

A few years ago I came across this dark horse of an album, in a secondhand store – I hadn’t even heard of Anais Mitchell. I just had a feeling, and it was cheap and I bought it. It turned out to be a ‘folk opera’ – the first one I’d ever listened to. It is the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, a tale of two lovers, an old Greek myth… The whole album is perfect driving-listening.
Willie of Winsbury – Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer
If you’re a folkie, and like stories, this album is really great for the road. If you’re not, you’ll probably hate me forever.
Community – Ali Barter
We have Ali’s Community EP in my boyfriend’s Dad’s car, so whenever we’re driving through Sydney in his ute, it’s usually Ali on the player.
Window – Angel Olsen
Love Angel’s haunting voice… Makes me feel things… Love listening to her if I’m driving by myself, and have a cry if I need to, hehe.
Last Living Rose – PJ Harvey
One of my favourite songs, being half-Australian, half-Scottish and born in England, the first lines always cut through to my heart, ‘take me back to beautiful England, and the great and filthiness of ages and battered books and fog rolling down behind the mountains, on the graveyards and dead sea-captains…’
Tilted – Christine and the Queens
Just TRY not to dance along to this in the car…! I’m obsessed with it, makes me wanna dance! F-yeh. x
