Getting to Know Jess Locke
Melbourne’s Jess Locke is the first signing to Pool House Records, which is The Smith Street Band’s new label. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… human, cesarean, cat loving, twenty-nine, very tired, lame, sore, thirsty, gluten-intolerant, unqualified.
Better/Bitter is… kind of a joke and kind of serious. It’s sort of about me and it’s sort of about the world. About being both a bit shit but also not so bad, and the human condition, blah, blah blah… Musically, it’s very simple, not much happens, just a few chords and few jokes. Thats pretty much it.
My forthcoming album will be… revolutionary! Ah… no, actually. But I am really happy with it. I think it’s pretty good. I think it sounds pretty good and I think some people will be into it. I don’t cringe when I listen to it, so it’s a good sign.
Home is… my favourite place to be. I don’t really like going out much. Home is cosy and warm and it has all my stuff and I don’t have to talk to anyone if I don’t want to. I like to spend a lot of time by myself working on stuff or (more realistically) watching tv. I like home. Home is also where my cat is, so in other words, where my heart is.
I spend too much time… at home. I definitely do. But I’m ok with that. I leave the house for gigs and to go to the supermarket. But like I said, I like home, so it’s not really a negative.
I’ve never… killed another human
It might surprise people to learn that… I used to perform in a craft and hobbies themed hip/hop act targeted at 7-30 year-olds. It involved a lot of lycra and back-up dancers.
In the future… I will leave the house even less than I do now.
