The Great Escape announces 100 more acts
The ever-brilliant Great Escape just announced another 100 artists from across the globe, and there are some absolute crackers that have been added to the already ace bill. You can see the full list of new list at the foot of this post but here are our top picks from this hot new batch:
ALEX THE ASTRONAUT
Anyone who has read this website with any level of regularity over the past couple of years will know that we love Alex The Astronaut (pictured, above). We’ve interviewed her a couple of times and even premiered one of her songs, so we’re very excited that she is going to be playing in Brighton in May. Her beautiful song about self-acceptance Not Worth Hiding, will certainly be a lovely festival moment and if you miss her, you’ll miss out.
WHENYOUNG
Their story started in Limerick, three underage teenagers met for the first time after sneaking into Costello’s Tavern: the only bar in town that floated their musical boats. After bonding over cheap vodka and the sound of The Velvet Underground, they began playing music together and moved to Dublin to seek some big city excitement. Developing their sound, still with a DIY approach, the band moved to London and last year became Whenyoung. Definitely catch them at TGE.
HERO FISHER
Hero writes atmospheric, intelligent, textured, nuanced songs. She’s French-born, English-raised and she lived in Australia for a bunch of time. She’s an interesting character with sparkle in her eye and a fire in her heart. And Hero is her real name, if you were wondering.
Another highlight of this new announcement is the addition of Steel Banglez to the spotlight Dome show with Mist + Mostack. He’s worked with everyone from Giggs, Ghetts, MIST and Wiley and now the East London super producer will bring his Midas touch to Brighton. Joining him is raw lyricist Fredo who’s proving he’s a force to be reckoned with.
This year rock will be coming to Brighton in the shape of Download Festival. The Mother Ship, the home, the headquarters of rock, punk & metal will be curating a stellar line-up of head-banging artists. They’re pitching for big things. Also partnering with the festival is Gilles Peterson’s Future Bubblers, the new talent discovery and development arm of Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Music, funded by the Arts Council. It’s ethos to extend into new areas of activity and new areas geographically across England, focusing on emerging artists from the underfunded leftfield contemporary music sector. The organisation handpicks and actively seeks out these new musical talents, mentoring them over a period of years.
The Future Bubblers line-up includes; alternative singer-songwriter Kid Katharsis, singer Yazmin Lacey with her rich soulful voice, Neo soul-influenced Mali Hayes, jazz-based producer Broadstrokes, Brighton’s own Elsa Hewitt, singer and MC Skinny Pelembe and Sheffield’s warped RnB star Nashe xx.
