Amelia Arsenic – Live Slow Die Old
“In gold we trust. We’re spun, in debt, obese, addicted.”
An ironic call to arms, Amelia Arsenic’s new track Live Slow, Die Old delivers the inverse of the hip hop message of chasing riches. The song’s refrain: “We’re Generation Y, we’re Generation Y-the-fuck-not”, a dry take on the nihilism of the yolo inter-zoned generational displacement of all us post boomers.
But at its heart is a hope that we’ll move forward: “Maybe you’ll wake up and feel today. More than utility, more than what other people say.”
Live Slow, Die Old is the first music video from Amelia Arsenic’s sophomore EP Queen of Risk, her first release with Chicago based industrial label Glitch Mode Recordings. The two setup video draws aesthetic inspiration from Japanese horror and the current trend to video decay visual effects.
But it isn’t too serious, the video is basically of a futuristic hologram hanging out in the suburbs. It clearly pokes fun at the glam veneer around music by placing it in a driveway that could be yours if you weren’t spending all your money on cafe breakfasts. It’s the familiar made strange enough to make you twitch to the beat.
The tracks that became the Queen of Risk EP were started while she was on her final tour in her old band Angelspit with Glitch Mode label boss, Sean Payne’s band Cyanotic, and completed remotely across hemispheres. The video is her second collaboration with director Oliver Heath.
Amelia will be touring the USA later this year, dates yet to be announced.
