Sydney Film fest is on again
It’s happening again fam. Syd film fest is on again, for its 65th year, and has released a cheeky little teaser of the films in their program which launches May 9th.
This year the festival will be running from the 6th – 17th of June with the usual venues of The State Theatre, Dendy Opera Quays and Newtown, Event Cinemas George Street, Art Gallery of NSW, Hayden Orpheum, Randwick Ritz, and Casula Powerhouse all back and ready for cinema goers to flock in for some film going fun. This year there’s also a new venue in town with Hoyts Entertainment Quarter joining the party.
With over 200 feature films and documentaries there is sure to be a film to satisfy a variety filmgoing audiences. Standouts from the teaser include Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist, a look at Vivian Westwood, fashion designer and punk icon, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, a film about a teen coming to terms with her sexuality only to be sent to a ‘de-gaying’ camp, Nicolas Pesce’s psychosexual thriller, Piercing, and I Used to be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story, a documentary on our obsession with boybands through the ages, animated feature The Breadwinner, and my personal favourite, Pick of the Litter, which follows the lives of five guide dog puppies. I’m looking forward to any other animal related documentaries when the full program come out on the 9th of May.
Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 film My Brilliant Career has been digitally restored by the National Film and Sound Archive for the big screen but other restorations are sure to follow when the program comes out.
The Virtual Reality program also is returning to the Festival Hub at Sydney Town Hall with many VR films released for the first time in Aus. With VR being at the forefront in shaping a new understanding of the filmgoing experiences, Sydney film festival patrons will have the opportunity to experience VR for themselves this year.
So Sydneysiders gather ’round like seagulls flocking for a chip cause you’re in for a treat. Mark your calendars and start counting down, cause Sydney Film festival is on really soon!
The full 2018 program for Sydney Film Festival will be announced on Wednesday May 9th and Flexipasses and subscriptions are on sale now.
