Getting to Know Sannia – interview
Sannia has just dropped her brand new single, Go And Get Over. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… Sannia. I’m a twenty-three year old keys-playing, noise-making musician. I’m doubled jointed, I can’t whistle, bananas freak me out, I grew up in a former RAAF base, once won a trophy for archery and I’m constantly abused for eating pizza with a knife and fork. My life is essentially a constant stream of piano ballads and poorly timed pop culture references.
‘Go And Get Over’ is… a slightly unconventional break-up song that I wrote and co-produced with Colin Leadbetter. You’ve sort of got these two very different personalities coming through; someone that’s clearly reminiscing and living in the past through rose coloured glasses. Then you’ve got this other determined, defiant character trying to convince themselves and all of us that they’re going to move on from this, that they’re unaffected and just ‘fine.’
My Gig at Wesley Anne on Friday July 13 will be… lit, and hopefully less superstitious than the date may suggest. I can’t wait to bring this single to life on stage with the band, who happen to also be my best friends. And there’s an album full of unreleased original music that I’d love to share with everyone. We also have a killer, all-female line up of support acts so you should definitely buy a ticket or two and come down. BYO black cats and broken glass.
Home is… the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, the back beaches, winding roads and towering pine trees. But it’s also the rattling trams and alley cats of Melbourne’s northern suburbs, home of my beloved Italian grandparents
I’m currently… watching the Australia V Denmark game in my pyjamas but if we’re talking career-wise I’m gigging and running an elective at the Victorian College of the Arts. I have the privilege of taking students through the history of contemporary pop music and teach them the necessary vocal techniques to replicate the sounds and styles of a particular era of music. And the equally rewarding privilege of sharing my favourite meme of the week with 180 students
I spend too much time… mixing and watching videos of Bernese mountain dog puppies, the latter usually to snap me out of the former.
It might surprise people to learn that… even though we’d spent a considerable amount in two incredible Melbourne studios, this single was put together in my producer’s converted garage in Brunswick. I have a theory that’s why I felt most comfortable about releasing it ahead of the EP, because I felt completely at home recording and producing it there. I get pretty intimidated in recording studios and often start to panic about the quality of my voice or lack thereof, but I honestly loved being able to put this song together with a friend over a beer.
This year, I’m going to… gig as much as possible, write repertoire that challenges me to move outside my comfort zone and stop overthinking my emoji use.
