Interview: Blasko gives it direction
Melbourne-based R&B artist Blasko recently released his new single ‘Know You Better’. We had a chat with him:
Your new single ‘Know You Better’ is out now, what was the writing process for this one?
It came together in my best mate’s car. I was jamming over an instrumental that was playing on the radio. Obviously going through something at the time with a special friend, so it pretty much poured out of me. I just gave it direction.
How long did it take you to put your current mixtape, ‘Blasko In Love Pt.1’, together?
I started the album with the Song “Future Love” I was just jamming in my studio and wanted to create something completely new, in terms of sound and melody. That is what came out!! The rest of the project came much easier and faster once I met Tentendo, who inspired a lot of the new sounds you will hear in my music today. All up it has probably been close to 2 years.
Tell us a little bit more about what inspired its creation…
Love is all I know, it is who I am. I have been spoiled by it. The inspiration was everyone around me, every interaction and every time I’ve fallen in love.

You’ve got a number of amazing support slots lined up, including SG Lewis and Joyner Lucas, are there any plans to do a tour of your own this year or will this be a treat for 2019?
Yeah, that is so insane, something that I’ve been discussing with my manager for a while now, so It’s great to start getting my name alongside some amazing talents and sharing the stage with my favourite people (including my Billy Davis family). I think a Blasko tour could be a great way to bring in yet another amazing year.
We checked out the triple j ‘Like A Version’ you featured on with GoldLink a few months ago, how was that for you?
That was surreal, when Billy Davis called me and said, “Yo, get ready, we are playing with Goldlink on triple j”. I was speechless, then the experience itself was a definite highlight of my life to date! GL was such a nice dude!
You also performed at Laneway Festival, what was your favourite part of that experience?
Beside the fact that I got to share one the biggest stages with my family and see a crowd of people roaring our names and singing our tunes. It would have to be after the show, sitting underneath the stage with Anderson .Paak just talking about life and love.
What drew you to R&B and soul when you first started creating music?
You can sing about anything and it still sounds sexy. Like I could sing about dog poop and it will still whisper off the tongue. Imagine how good Boyz II Men would sound harmonically singing about that.. Absolute bliss.
Which artists can you currently not stop listening to? Are there any hometown Melbourne gems that we should know about?
Firstly my boy Jordan Dennis, his new mixtape is going to shred through the Hip Hop scene. Tentendo’s new release is set to be a massive one, the man can do no wrong. Kaiit is another homegrown artist that I admire and she is rightfully making herself the Queen of RnB and HipHop in Melbourne and very soon globally. Apart from them, Leon Bridges’ new album is on constant repeat, Masego, Goldlink and Anderson .Paak are all in the repeat list.
