Interview: Getting to know Violet
Under the Violet moniker, Sydney’s Jessica Meier has released her new single. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… Violet – a 22 year-old musician from Sydney, I started making music under the name because it’s my middle name – I was named after my great-grandmother Violet.
BOXES/HOUSES is… a song I wrote at home one day, whilst sitting alone with my loop pedal. It’s about the repetitive nature of suburban life & I guess how terrifying ‘normal’ life can be sometimes. I recorded the song with my boyfriend Alex, in a small shed in Lithgow we rented off airbnb (hopefully the owner never reads this), Alex also produced the track. And I made the music video with my friends Jessica Vincenza and Harleigh English – which also happened to be shot in Lithgow, which includes a cast of family and friends.
My single launch in Sydney will be… at Goodspace Gallery on the 31st of August, it’s going to be a night of art & live music. All the artists contributing are close friends of mine, and are creating works after listening to the track. I’ll be playing an extended set, with lot’s of new songs, Tim Lee is going to be doing live visuals and we’ll be finishing with a screening of the ‘BOXES/HOUSES’ video. I’ll also be selling zines! So come along, it’s only $5!
Home is… Sydney – but neither of my parents are Australian, my mum is British and my dad’s from New Zealand. I spent a few years of my childhood living in England too, but Sydney is definitely home, I love it a little too much.
I spend too much time… watching Twin Peaks – I just finished Twin Peaks: The Return, and my mind has been blown. David Lynch is actually God. I also have spent too much time lately listening to Sevdaliza, today I just rediscovered her track ‘Another Girl’ and have fallen in love all over again, if you haven’t listened check it out! I also spend way too much time obsessing over my dog Prince – which you will know if you follow me on Instagram, so sorry in advance for that.
I’ve never… watched Titanic – I’m one of these weird people that for some reason has never seen a lot of very very famous movies. When people hear that, they often are very confused/concerned.
It might surprise people to learn that… in September I’m travelling to Broken Hill with Jessica Vinceza and Harleigh English (who I made the ‘BOXES/HOUSES’ video with) to shoot a short film that Jess has written. I’ll be working as the sound engineer and also scoring the film, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
