Getting to know Self Tape
Sydney-based electronic artist Self Tape has just released his new single and video. We asked him to tell us about himself:
I am… lost without the ability to create and be surrounded by creative people. This is why I love to collaborate, especially outside of the realm of music, namely in photography and art. This can sometimes be as gratifying as making the music, especially when it’s transported to a place you never thought it could go, which always takes the vision of a few talented individuals to get there in my opinion.
Hanging Over You is… a culmination of a lot of different emotions and ideas. Once the vocal grab was stretched and mixed it had a lot of weight behind it which brought out feelings in me that were very present at the time of writing. It’s suppressing a yearning for something more, when what you have is already perfect.
Home is… Sydney for now, but has been Brisbane, London and Amsterdam. I love to travel and love how it inspires my writing. It comes and goes in waves, but I can really hone in if I’m abroad. This is something I hear a lot from the artists around me, and it’s definitely true for me.
I spend too much time… behind a camera. This isn’t supposed to be a negative however as an artist it’s important to build your brand, so it makes it harder when I’m not the focus of every photograph. I kind of like the challenge of creating new content in this way. It opens up a lot of doors to collaborate with other creatives.
I’ve never… slept on a plane. Those long-haul flights to London were never easy. In fact, as I write this, I’m three gins in on my way to New York City.
It might surprise people to learn that… I used to play drums in a metal band. I was a real metal head growing up and listening to a lot of technical hardcore and math core bands. I guess I was drawn to the drumming and rhythms of these bands, it’s crazy how music taste can change so dramatically as you mature. Every now and then I’ll pop on an old metal record on and air drum like a mad man.
