Our top ten tunes of the week – May 24
These are the songs that have been lighting our fireworks over the past seven days:
1. whenyoung – The Others
The band’s most politically explicit song, ‘The Others’ came out of the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy. Deeply affected by the fire, the whenyoung wanted to draw attention to the separation between the haves and have-nots in society, and how it is important to not turn a blind eye to the suffering of those less fortunate than yourself.
2. Jarv Is – Must I Evolve?
New from Jarvis Cocker, apparently the single will only be available for purchase at live shows because Jarv Is is “primarily a live experience. Life is primarily a live experience.”
3. BENE – Evil Spider
The 19-year-old, Auckland-born indie pop artist has just released her new brand new single. Check it.
4. Little May – As Loving Should
Little May’s national album tour kicks off in Brisbane on June 21 and continues to Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide, ending in Perth on July 12
5. Emerson Snowe – Our Home
Emerson is currently touring Europe and the UK, before heading home to Australia to perform shows across the east coast in July.
6. OKENYO – Buckle Up
Of the track, OKENYO says, “Buckle Up signifies a change in me, it’s intimate but confident and bold all at the same time. I wanted to explore the art of love by verbalising how we relate through our bodies, the tension and release. I love the freedom and elation in this song, it’s joy unbound. It’s cute AF.”
7. Halsey – Nightmare
Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, this excellent new video features an all-female cast.
8. Washington – Dirty Churches
To celebrate the release of her new single, Washington will perform a series of rare, intimate performances in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne this June.
9. Boo Seeka – Millennium Drive
Sydney electronic duo Boo Seeka have just dropped a fiery video for their new single.
10. Marika Hackman – I’m Not Where You Are
The rock provocateur will release her highly anticipated new album ‘Any Human Friend’ on 9th August.
