Getting to know Salarymen

Sydney-based Salarymen have just released their new single ‘That Man’. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… Salarymen, a two-piece indie duo from Sydney’s Inner West made up of Thom Eagleton and Renee de la Motte.

That Man is… a song about a friend of ours who was trying to leave an abusive relationship. The lyrics reflect the frustration of watching someone close to you become so manipulated that they start to excuse unacceptable things. The song essentially follows this person through their slow and tumultuous break-up, and then their newfound freedom once it’s over.

Home is… Japan! We have good friends there and go there regularly, and whenever we do, it just feels like home. There also isn’t a place where we’ve felt as loved and supported by strangers as Japan. The culture and the people are extremely welcoming and hospitable.

We spend too much time… trying to perfect minuscule aspects of our songs over and over again. We have a home studio in Marrickville, which we record and produce everything in. It’s so convenient, but it can also be a burden, as you don’t know when to actually finish a song and move on.

We’ve never… thought about packing up our stuff and moving overseas to pursue music. It’s definitely something that we see a lot of bands doing lately, and maybe something to consider for the future. Australia is its own little world, and there are definitely pros and cons to being a musician here.

It might surprise people to learn that… Renee learnt to play the bass in 9 months (while singing at the same time). We needed a bassist, so she got a bass guitar in March 2019 for her birthday, and played her first show with Salarymen on December of that year. If you spend enough hours on something, you can do anything!
