Getting to know Pacific Avenue

Kiama-based indie-rock quartet Pacific Avenue have just revealed their new single, Easy Love. We asked drummer Dom to tell us about the band:

We are… Pacific Avenue. We are four guys who all grew up in the sleepy coastal towns of Kiama and Gerringong, all with a passion to make some rock and roll music. Living together in the small community, mutual friends and interests all drew us together and created a band which infused the sound of past rock and roll ballads, with modern Indie rock tones. In the early days of forming Pacific Avenue in 2017, Harry, Dom and Jack all moved out for the first time into a little seaside shack in the Wollongong suburb of Woonona. It was during this time that the band created a strong bond and grew inspiration for their songwriting as they began to experience their ‘coming of age’ and the strong emotions which came along with it.

As we developed from these early days, so did our music, with themes touching more on worldly issues, rather than partying and young love. Our sound has drawn greater influence from the rock classics with the aim to start a rock and roll revolution.

Easy Love is… about falling for a lovely lady effortlessly. Whilst love can be an entirely complicated mess, it’s also the easiest thing we do, and running into someone, unexpectedly at that, and finding that you don’t need to try to be anyone but yourself, is a very sweet thing and is something that’s worth holding on to. “It’s hard getting things right, but it’s easy lovin’ you” Regardless of who you are, your sexual preference, or who you identify as, love is love, and that’s what we hope to convey through the song and the video clip.

Home is… Kiama and Gerringong on the south coast of New South Wales. Although the community is pretty sleepy, we keep ourselves busy recording in Ben’s home studio, roller-skating at the Oak Flats rink, and surfing. All our families live here too, so it is lovely having that family connection and getting that frequent home cooked meal from mum. The name ‘Pacific Avenue’ is actually the name of a street in Gerringong just down from Ben’s home studio. It came to us one morning after a surf as we were daydreaming in the car park.

I spend too much time… filming stupid videos. I live in a house with Matt and Jack from ‘The Inspired Unemployed’ so much of my time is spent filming with them, or filming Harry Potter videos on my own channel. The locals have gradually learnt to accept us over time, as we frequently disrupt the neighbourhood running around screaming through the neighbourhood.

As a band we also spend way too much time roller-skating. Jack (who is debatably the smoothest skater) got us all hooked on the sport, resulting in us frequenting the local rink far too often and making us late for shows.

I’ve never… seen Jurassic Park. I know this may be seen as an unforgivable sin; however, I now feel like it is too late for me to watch it. Numerous times I have been out, and the series has come up in conversation. I am then forced to pretend I know what everyone is talking about to avoid harassment and judgement. Maybe 2021 is the year I finally break the seal.

It might surprise people to learn that… Dom, Harry and Jack lived off two-minute noodles and frozen lasagnes from Aldi for 8 months whilst living together. It is amazing they are still with us.
