Getting to know Shannen James
Melbourne artist Shannen James has just released her new single, Separate Ways. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… currently in my 6th lockdown in Melbourne sitting on my loungeroom floor in the sun on my computer (yay for sunny winter days!). I thankfully have been keeping busy with working on songs on zoom, which is strange but I’m kinda used to it now. So that has helped this lockdown at least go by pretty fast unlike some of the others.
Separate Ways is… a little bit of a self-healing song about not letting broken or lost relationships overshadow all the good memories and times you had with a person. Not everything last forever and I think this song helped me realise that sometimes they just run their course for whatever reason.
Home is… where I have spent pretty much 99.9 percent of my time since last February. I love my home and I would definitely call myself a home body BUT maybe not quite this much! Looking forward to a change of scenery whenever that may be.
I spend too much time… watching vegan recipe videos on Instagram, trying to get my greyhound Howie to give me more attention (I know it’s usually the other way round), chasing the sun in my loungeroom all day to keep up that vitamin D, vacuuming – I think I vacuum at least a couple times a day cause I cant handle specks of crumbs on the floorboards.
I’ve never… been to the coast of Italy and the reason that is my answer is because that seems to be all I can think about lately knowing it’s their summer over there.
The last 18 months have been… nothing I could have imagined in my wildest dreams. It’s been probably the most testing time of my life having to navigate through this pandemic. But has also allowed me to reflect on how fortunate I am and truly understand all the incredible things I have in my life that maybe I took for granted before. So a big learning curve as well.
It might surprise people to learn that… I also work as a disability support worker. I take people out into the community to help and guide them to achieving their goals which may be things like learning how to cook, swim, use public transport, grocery shopping, arts and crafts. Lots of different things and I absolutely love the people that I work with and seeing them grow and enjoy themselves.
