Interview: Getting to know Synge

Sydney-based metalcore group Synge have just revealed their debut single. We asked James Merkouris from the band to tell us more:

We are… Synge, a 4-piece metalcore band from Sydney, Australia!

Refract is… our debut single. The song itself is centred around the progressive dichotomy of a person’s hatred, from extrospective to introspective. Refract is almost a form of dialogue between ourselves, “I”, and the world in which we are situated, “you”.

Home is… (obligatory “home is where the heart is” quote) a place of comfort and familiarity. A place where you are free to explore all types of ideas without the fear of judgement. It’s where all our music is written. It’s where our band was formed. It’s our identity as a group, and as friends.

We spend too much time… messing around at rehearsal sessions when we should be, ya know, rehearsing.

We’ve never… written music in person – It’s all done online. (To be fair, that’s not in our control with Covid right now)

(Quick fire round!) It might surprise people to learn that…
We finished writing Refract in June of 2020, finished recording it in October of 2020, and finally released it nearly a year later!
Our Drummer is also our Clean Vocalist.
Half of our band wasn’t even born in Australia (Our Bassist was born in the UK, and our Guitarist was born in Greece!).
