Something You Said’s top TV shows of 2021
These are the very best TV shows that have aired over the past 12 months, as voted for by the Something You Said team:
1. IT’S A SIN
La! This UK drama saw a group of friends living through the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s. Astonishingly good, and utterly heartbreaking television.
2. SUCCESSION
The Roy family’s civil war raged on, with Kendall and Logan going head-to-head. Meanwhile, the rest of the family got caught in the crossfire, and desperately tried to work the situation in their own favour. And how good was that finale?
3. TED LASSO
The second series of the generously-spirited and wholesome football-based show picked up from where we left off last time, with the team now plying their trade in the Championship.
Ted might not have a clue about the intricacies of the offside trap, but his unconventional, man-manager skills are second to none.
4. SQUID GAME
The Korean drama saw hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept a mysterious invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize. However, when the games began, they discovered that the stakes were deadly.
5. THE BEATLES: GET BACK
Absolutely mesmerising from start to finish, this three-part docco had so many highlights, not least Paul McCartney coming up with the song Get Back from scratch.
6. THE HANDMAID’S TALE
Season Four saw June, played brilliantly by Elisabeth Moss, strike back against Gilead as a fierce rebel leader.
7. LANDSCAPERS
So inventive, and it took a few very unexpected turns in terms of its style and storytelling mechanisms. It’s an absolute must-watch. One of the best of the year.
8. MIDNIGHT MASS
Described by critics as “a triumph of terror” this Netflix drama saw the arrival of a charismatic priest bring miracles, mysteries and renewed religious fervour to a dying town.
9. LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM
This beautiful and charming series followed young adults on the autism spectrum in search of love.
10. MARE OF EASTTOWN
The series wowed audiences with its raw tale of a detective, played by Kate Winslet, on the hunt for a small-town murderer.
