Loretta on learning to produce your own music
Eora/Sydney-based indie-pop trio Loretta have recently unveiled the music video for their single, Dad’s Mercedes. They shared their thoughts on music production with us:
Producing our own music as band has become an enormous part of how we express ourselves. The creative freedom it provides us, is so refreshing in an industry where you’re often expected to conform to certain standards. Even if producing a ‘final product’ doesn’t appeal to you as an artist, learning the vocabulary and understanding how to communicate ideas you might have is extremely valuable.
As an independent artist the most challenging part about executing any part of the creative process is budget. Whether it’s production, mixing, music videos, PR, or live shows – budget is always the first hurdle to overcome and will likely have a noticeable effect on what you’re trying to achieve.
Understanding music production has allowed us to work at our own speed and be as creative as possible, whilst keeping within our very limited budget as an independent artist. It’s also allowed for us to produce and contribute towards our friends’ projects and artistic visions too (friends like RAGEFLOWER, X&ND, Pretty Talks, Jnr.).
There are tons of amazing and valuable resources for breaking into music productions and good chunk of them are free! We always recommend diving right into the endless pool of YouTube tutorials on production for any genre you could possibly imagine. From there, budget permitting, investing in a cheap but reliable interface is a must-do. With an interface, YouTube, and some ideas there’s no limit to what you can do in the world of music production.
Bands and artists producing their own music or at least having a hand in their own production is becoming more and more of an industry standard. To further articulate that point here are a few of our favourite local up and comers who are either producing their own music in its entirety or being heavily involved in the production alongside their producer : Chris Lanzon , Nick Ward, Jnr., Chelsea Warner, Lola Scott, Mel Blue, lovemedo, The Million.
We’re big believers in artists retaining as much control over how they sound and present to the world as possible. Entering the world of music production is one of the key ways to hold on to a bit of that control or at least be able to communicate with the people helping form your sound.
