Getting to know Ike(from)Pluto

Ngunnawal/Canberra-based hip-hop artist Ike(from)Pluto has returned with his new single. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am – an Alien navigating a world of exclusivity, Ike(from)Pluto, aka Lil Pluto, aka Ike, aka Ikey Escobar, aka Big Pluto, aka Donut$, aka B-Town’s OG Pretty Boy.

Bricky Sunshine is – the first song I created in full to break a year-long bout with writer’s block. The theme is seeing the light that pierces through the cracks in the wall, rather than at the end of the tunnel. Life always has little gems for me even in the worst of times, so I try to focus on those rather than the destination or what I don’t have. The track itself is an exuberant delivery of bars about my obstacles and how I cope with them, almost a rapper’s gallows laugh.

Home is – something I’m still trying to understand. I feel like it starts with the safety and judgement-free comfort of your family, whoever you choose those people to be, but there’s probably more to it than that. To answer more literally, Belconnen, the cultural capital of Canberra.

I spend too much time – daydreaming, just letting my mind run. It’s probably the greatest source of my overthinking.

I’ve never – drunk alcohol or used an illicit substance in my life. It has nothing to do with trying to be ‘good’ or better than anyone, it’s partially because of my commitments as an athlete, but mostly because I’m weary of altering my perception of reality when I’m barely grasping it as it is.

It might surprise people to learn that – I created the cover art for Bricky Sunshine and storyboarded/directed the entire music video.
