Midnight live in Sydney – photos and review
Midnight played in Marrickville, Sydney, with support from Petrol, Blasfemenica and Stalker. We were there to capture the awesomeness:
Marrickville Bowlo is the new home of metal in the Inner West. With bands like Riot City, Cirith Ungol and Pungent Stench set to grubby up the stage or already have left a filthy mark, and tonight sees a full bill of blackened rock and metal blasted at full volume.
Local blackened thrashers Petrol get the fire started with some crusty riffs and blast beats. Short, fast and loud as fuck, the four piece rip in, the Bowlo copping a solid serving of high octane metal.
Short changeovers saw bullet belt clad black n’ roll trio Blasfemancia kick things into second gear, tearing us a new one with their old school black metal stylings.
The crowd were warming up, a few beers deep, a few riffs shy of a moshpit, Blasfemancia didn’t slow up for a second.
Straight out of NZ, and with legendary drummer Matt Skitz behind the kit, thrash titans Stalker had the crowd champing at the bit. Like the bastard love child of Slayer and Manowar, banshee screams and chugging, thrash riffs aplenty.
With lightning speed, the Wellington trio ran circles around the stage, the step count in the thousands. Of Steel And Fire, Black Majik Terror, Ripped To Pieces, each track faster than the last!
Filthy, obnoxious, fast! Cleveland, Ohio cult motherfuckers Midnight are here to whip us into a frenzy of sleaze, leather and chains. Celebrating 21 years, the trio are legally allowed to get fucked up, and with a new record in tow, their sixth full length, these masked bastards are bringing one hell of a party.
All Hail Hell, Endless Slut, Black Rock’n’roll, hard and fast, the crowd was pumping. Stage divers leapt and hoped to be caught, pints of beer splashed with reckless abandoned. Frontman Athenar swings into the crowd, dangling off the steel pole in the centre of the stage, arms reach out, horns thrown in the masked faces of Athenar and Shaun Venek.
Lust Filth and Sleaze, Szex Witchery, Here Comes Sweet Death, some of the sleaziest metal around.
“Sign my Midnight Tattoo” yells a girl in the crowd, “sign my big nice titties?” Questions Athenar, “only with my jizz!” He yells back. Called back for an actual encore, it didn’t go to plan when the amp stacks blew up before another riff could be rung. It’s rock n roll to blow an amp but could’ve been more flames and during the song, Still rock n roll!
