The top 15 bands at SXSW Sydney 2024 – part 1
We went to SXSW Sydney and caught 15 bands that you need to watch out for. Here are the first batch, according to our seven-time SXSW veteran photographer Adam Davis-Powell:
15 – Bakers Eddy
Hailing from Wellington, NZ, and now based in Australia, Bakers Eddy deliver a chaotic yet tender blend of punk and pop. With infectious energy and hits like “21” and “My Baby’s Like Cigarettes,” their live shows make everyone feel like part of the family. Expect feel-good, indie-rock vibes that leave you craving more!
14 – Sex Mask
Sex Mask are Melbourne’s post-punk/alt-rock mystery-makers. Their sound is part riddle, part manifesto, and completely captivating. Fans rave about their otherworldly vibe and infectious energy. The question is—can you handle their enigmatic allure?
13 – The Grogans
Melbourne trio The Grogans are masters of genre-blending, fusing surf, blues, and garage rock with punk and psych vibes. Known for their tireless touring and crowd-pleasing live shows, they’re fast becoming one of Australia’s most beloved young acts.
12 – Loose Content
Loose Content, a rising indie/alt-rock trio from Melbourne, channel vibes from The Police and Radiohead, delivering a sound that’s part punk, part pop. Their high-energy live shows are a must-see, and their debut album is sure to be a hit.
11 – Crocodylus
Sydney’s garage punk powerhouse Crocodylus bring high-octane energy with every show. With a loyal following, they’re known for their electrifying performances and raw, dynamic sound. Keep an ear out for their latest single, “Cup of Tea.”
10 – Moonchild Sanelly
Moonchild Sanelly is South Africa’s queen of “future-ghetto-funk.” With a fearless message of female empowerment and collaborations with Beyoncé and Gorillaz, she’s an unstoppable force. 2024 is set to be her year!
9 – Mulga Bore Hard Rock
Mulga Bore Hard Rock, a six-piece glam rock band from Australia’s remote desert, has taken the stage by storm. With influences from KISS and Guns N’ Roses, this young band is destined for greatness. Watch out for them in 2024!
8 – Dogworld
Melbourne’s Dogworld blend post-punk, alt-country, and jazz into something fresh and exciting. Known for their captivating live shows, this four-piece is quickly becoming a band to watch. Their debut EP is sure to make waves.
