Death from Above 1979 to hit Australia

Death from Above 1979 (originally known as Death From Above) smashed onto the scene with their debut album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine back in 2004. I still remember walking into my local record store and having the clerk—a true music nerd—shove it into my hands with a knowing smile. I didn’t know what to expect, but from the opening riff, I was floored. How does a two-piece make such a colossal, chaotic, beautiful racket?

Comprised of Jesse F. Keeler (bass/synth) and Sebastien Grainger (drums/vocals), DFA 1979 is more than a band—they’re a force. Formed in Toronto in 2001, they quickly built a reputation for their raw, high-energy sound. Their fusion of dirty Rock ‘n’ Roll, Dance-Punk, and noise rock doesn’t just grab you—it demands your attention. Tracks like “Romantic Rights” and “Blood on Our Hands” are relentless, with hooks that sink deep and don’t let go.

That debut record became a game-changer, influencing an entire generation of bands. Without DFA, we might not have Soft Play (formerly Slaves) or the ferocious sound of Royal Blood. Their influence is woven into the DNA of modern rock.

Fast forward two decades, and You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine still hits as hard as it did back then. Now, DFA 1979 are bringing their explosive live show to Aussie shores this April, with the equally raucous DZ Deathrays in tow.

For me, this isn’t just another gig—it’s a chance to relive that first jaw-dropping moment and celebrate the enduring power of this legendary duo. Check out the dates below, grab your tickets, and I’ll see you in the pit. Don’t forget your earplugs—you’re going to need them.
