Getting to Know Big Vacation

Eora/Sydney-based indie-pop artist Big Vacation has returned with a new single. We asked him to tell us more:

I am … Chris Baker, writer and producer of the new alt-pop project, Big Vacation, based in Eora/Sydney. This project leans into the influences of hip-hop, punk, and lofi-soul to find different angles on alt-pop, lo-fi, and indie music. It takes some time, but I’m loving the DIY approach- songwriting, production, mixing, photography, and filming has been hand-woven by myself.

‘Store Clerk’ is… alt-pop with lo-fi hip-hop influences which is sprung from a piece of advice I was given from an old neighbour once – ‘Always make room for the things you love in your life because they’ll make you happy and influence the happiness of those around you’. It makes sense in different ways at different stages of life – that’s really what this song is about. I wanted it to flow almost like that conversation which is why the form doesn’t include a chorus. Shock horror.

Home is… Eora/Sydney, Australia. I have planted roots on the northern beaches of Sydney, and grew up in Campbelltown in the city’s south-west, so I’ve been lucky enough to know the many dimensions of Sydney.

I spend too much time… currently reading a lot of research literature. I teach at university in another professional field along with doing my own post grad studies, so recently I feel like I’m synthesising very specific research that only 0.001% of the people would care about. I know, real ‘life of the party’ type stuff.

I’ve never been to… the Northern Territory or Tasmania, and this needs to change.

It might surprise people to learn that… I’m left-handed, and also have a double jointed thumb on my right hand.

‘Store Clerk’ is available worldwide now. Keep up to date with Big Vacation on Insta.
