Getting to know Emily Ulman

Melbourne/Narrm artist Emily Ulman has shared her new single, Mountains Mountains Mountains, which also serves as a peek into her upcoming full-length album set for release later this year. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… equal parts artist and organiser. I always have a calendar full of gigs, Bulldogs games, half-written lyrics and overly ambitious self-replenishing to-do lists.

I write songs that… try to explain things talking can’t. After a 10-year detour into running festivals and championing other artists, I’m back to releasing my own music – which feels both surreal and exactly right.

2025 has so far been… the year I finally stopped saying “I’m going to release an album” and started actually releasing music again. It is a gentle miracle in slow motion.

My upcoming gig at Merri Creek Tavern on Monday 2nd June with Alec Ilyine from Belgium will be… a fun, curious night of songs and stories. One of us will bring an accent, the other will bring a guitar tuner (and wine) for moral support.

Home is… an endless jumble of books, instruments and Bulldogs merch, with tea cooling beside half-written lyrics or prose, and guitars leaning against every wall like they live there (because they do)

I spend too much time… opening tabs, forgetting why, and then Googling something unrelated but urgent.

I’ve never… been one for small talk, though I’m perfectly suited for it in height.
