Getting to know Mama Kin Spender
Hi… Mama Kin here of Mama Kin Spender. We are a garage/folk duo flung to either ends of this great red land. We have a new album PROMISES, out now. This album is a shotgun ride through the the glee, collapse and transformation of love. It was carved from stories extracted from our own chests, and it now stands as our apology, our medicine and a manifesto.
I am… struggling with winter but also trying to be cool and patient and all like “yeah the cave is important too… blah blah” but really I want to lie in the sun and watch the salt cake up on my skin.
2025 has so far been… like being shot out of a cannon. I mean what in the actual gracious me is happening. I feel excited about finally releasing these songs and stories that have been buzzing around, debilitated by world events, confused by the rising tide of AI crazy shit sticks. But also I am now absolutely CONVINCED that time is moving WAY faster and no it is not about perspective.
I am pretty sure April and May got delivered at 1.5 speed. Anyone else on that vibe?
Our upcoming tour will be… such a relief to just be out of the digital space and deep into the howling and banging drum and playing guitar and story telling and making the roar out of the raw!
Home is… love. Home is my doggo. Home is a fire. Home is a bath. Home is dinner. Home is backgammon. Home is laughing.
I spend too much time… at the gym! Nah.. I wish.. I spend too much time on my phone. I have an addiction and I hate it and I’m seriously thinking I don’t actually have the skills to break it on my own.
I’ve never… been more proud of a body of work than I am of these songs. We worked so hard for them. They are the truth, of a time that changed us and I drink them as a bitter and healing medicine. I am a better person because I got to sit with a dear friend and let these songs find us. I will get stronger and softer over and over by singing them and sharing them and I am here for it.
This is human storytelling. No AI can ever replicated what happens when we step into a room with our instruments and create a field of connection between each other. This is what it is all about for me. Connection. I just want to connect, and these songs are our light sabres. Is that how you spell sabre? Saber? Yep.. looked it up.. It is SABER.
