Getting to know Lucy Neville

Sydney electro-pop songstress Lucy Neville has returned with a new single. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Lucy Neville. I am a 22-year-old electronic artist from Sydney, a proud & passionate reality TV viewer and a BIG fan of Smiths Original Crinkle Cut potato chips. I am a huge family person and my family are definitely the best people in the world (completely unbiased). I’m currently answering these q’s on a small rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Norfolk Island (whilst eating crinkle cut chips), and I believe there is nothing better than diving into the ocean first thing in the morning. My favourite album right now (possibly permanently) is Melodrama by Lorde and every time I hear Supercut it takes me back to feeling total joy, dancing under the fireworks at the Opera House with my sister, at her Sydney show last year.

Wasting Our Time is…
my brand new single, produced by Marc Malouf, mixed by Simon Cohen and mastered by Leon Zervos. Wasting Our Time actually started out as ‘Strangers’, and the original demo that I created full of lush strings and half as slow still holds a special place in my heart. However, when it came time to start production we fell out of love with the strings and the vibe and we wanted to experiment, following whenever that lead us. Marc and I got double-booked in the studio one day which turned out to be the happiest accident. We headed back to Marc’s place and just played with new chords, melodies, words and he ended up playing this riff on his acoustic guitar that shaped the way Wasting Our Time would sound going forward. I’m so proud of this song, it feels so genuine and honest as well as fun and playful, and for me represents a new chapter of pushing myself both as an artist and as a writer.

Home is… a few places for me. In Sydney, in my parents house where I learnt to sing and play all kinds of instruments. There’s a music room there and a baby grand piano that knows me and my emotions better than I do. Home is wherever I am with my partner/best mate Alex. It doesn’t seem to matter whether we’re in Sydney or on the other side of the world, there is just something about experiencing life together that gives me peace of mind, knowing that I’ll be happy wherever we end up. Home is also this island that I’m on right now, Norfolk Island. I came here through my work with BeyondBlue four years ago as a part of Mental Health Week, there I met a wonderful music teacher who brought me back to run a singing workshop at the Island school, and I’ve made wonderful and lifelong friends who I come back to visit every year and I feel so lucky to be welcomed with open arms, homes and hearts.

I spend too much time… watching awful Netflix Christmas romance movies. I know the whole plot before it even begins and the acting is questionable at best but I CAN’T STOP?!

It might surprise people to learn that… I’m born on the 29th of February 1996, I’m a leap year babe! So technically I’m only 5 years old but fear not, I truly milk the ‘no birthday this year’ thing and encourage everyone to celebrate my birthday week/month.

I’ve never… ever eaten tomato/bbq sauce/mayonnaise. Honestly, just the sight of these condiments makes me GAG. It’s something about the texture? I can’t really explain it but just trust me, we’ll get along fine if we order chips with sauce on the side.

In the future… I hope to be playing shows, so many shows and touring internationally is the dream for me, and to play the Australian festival circuit would be nothing short of incredible. In early 2019, the Wasting Our Time tour is coming to Sydney and Melbourne and that has me feeling SO grateful and excited. I’ve never played in another city and I’m really nervy but also counting down the days.

Keep up top date with Lucy on Facebook.
