Getting to know Matt Perriment

We asked London-based indie-folk artist Matt Perriment to tell us about himself:

I am… Matt Perriment, a singer songwriter based in London, unable to sit still and consistently dealing with all my issues big or small by writing and playing music. I’m a completely self-taught musician and weirdly not from a musical family. I just fell in love with locking myself away from everyone in a room and just writing music.

Oceans is… about the ups and downs of a long-distance relationship, and the longing for someone to come home. Home in this track isn’t really physical, it’s about being together, whether that’s travelling the world or an actual home. In essence, it’s tough but it’s worth it in the end.

Home is… an odd one for me. Like I wrote about in ‘Oceans’, I think home for me is a pretty fluid concept. My family lived abroad for a while, and I’ve lived in London for nearly 8 years for work and music, but I oddly don’t see London as my home. It’s never really been the right fit for me. I think home for me is where the people I associate it with are at that time. I’m happy for home to be a shack in the woods somewhere if I’m with the right people.

I spend too much time… drinking coffee and finding weird alternate tunings on my guitar that make playing live a bloody nightmare.

I’ve never… been able to whistle properly and it annoys me more than you can imagine. It’s probably why I don’t write blues music.

It might surprise people to learn that… at my first ever festival show, I had to completely make up the lyrics live to my closing song as I’d forgotten to even write them in the first place. I got so excited about the instrumental of the track, taught the band, promising I’d write them in time… but never did. Once we played the intro I realised and by that point there was no turning back.
