Getting to know Reckless Coast

Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie/rock band Reckless Coast have shared their new single. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… Reckless Coast. A crew of three coastal misfits from along the East Coast of Australia, all with a love of the rock genre who moved to Queensland’s capital city Brisbane to pursue music careers.

Burn Street is… about realising you lost the closest thing you had to a home.

The song is about my first share house in Burn Street, Camp Hill (Brisbane). I lived there after moving out of my childhood home in Lismore, NSW.

It was like a little family… living with a couple who got married soon after I moved in, their dog, and their best mate. It was this old, pre-war brick house that had the most lovely, homely atmosphere, with a classic QLD suburban backyard. We had movie nights every Sunday, cook-ups, and board game nights. Picture the most ideal and perfect living situation, and that’s what it was like.

After only eight months, however, the lease came up for renewal, and the couple moved to North Queensland. Their friend moved back home, and we all parted our separate ways.

The share houses that followed over the next two years never came close to being a home like Burn Street, and whilst living in a derelict, terribly renovated old Queenslander house in Paddington, I realised that the share house in Burn Street would be the closest thing to a home I had in Brisbane, and I never knew until that moment.

Home is… a peaceful suburb in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. After many years of searching, I finally found a place that I’ve made home for myself. There are cafes, restaurants, and markets, and the suburb is very green and beautiful… I still need to buy some rugs for the apartment though, that’ll pull the whole place together.

We spend too much time… coffee hunting that’s for sure. Everytime India and I have an errand to run we’re “treating ourselves” for doing the work, usually with a stop to ‘Death Before Decaf’ (an amazing hard-rock / hard-core coffee shop that runs 24/7). Too often we run late to something because of our “lil treat” side-quests.

We’ve never… played overseas, and we’re dying to do it. We want to go to the U.K. next year and hopefully get into the European festival circuit. There’s just so many bands we vibe with, and I think our style would really suit. America would also be amazing. Plus, I was a massive blues kid, and if we did a tour over there, I’d definitely take some time to explore music scenes in places such as Chicago and New Orleans.

It might surprise people to learn that… I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. India’s also vegetarian, and we now have backed Jono into a mostly plant-based diet on tour since we do all our own cooking. People always ask if I remember the taste of meat, and honestly, I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head… other than bacon, which tastes exactly how it smells.
