Interview: Getting To Know Ah Trees

Perth-based quintet Ah Trees have just revealed their new single. We asked Bryn Ryan from the band to tell us more:

We are… Ah Trees

Shark Bait is… an ode to the age of trolls, the misinformed, the angry boys club, the world burners – a call to arms to fight for our future.

Home is… Sumo Studios, where we rehearse most of the time and have just filmed live videos for last single ‘How Long Must We Wait’ and current single ‘Shark Bait’. We love being able to have the whole space to ourselves and chatting to Tristan, the owner, who does the tracking for our live videos and doesn’t mind handing us the keys when we want to jam until all hours.

I spend too much time… watching YouTube videos about boutique vintage guitar pedals, scratching my head and stroking my beard. Also, thinking about things but not actually doing the things.

I’ve never… existed as a singular entity with my own conscious before; usually I’m the collaborative artistic music project of 5 different people that exists for minutes at a time as a series of pressure waves in the air. What’s not to love about symphonic blackened deathcore or avant-garde, experimental, minimalist percussion quintets for that matter.

It might surprise people to learn that…

4 of 5 members have played for the same indoor cricket team.

There’s over 10 years difference between the oldest and youngest members.

Our name is derived from a subreddit.

Despite all odds, every member is in a stable long-term relationship.
