Our top ten tunes of the week – July 23

These are the songs that have been lighting our fireworks over the past seven days:

1. Julia Stone – Break

The Australian artist and long-term friend of Something You Said has marked her eagerly-anticipated solo return with a dynamic shift from her folk origins. The single was produced by none other than St. Vincent and Thomas Bartlett, with contributions from Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint and Bryce Dessner (The National).

2. Sycco – Dribble

Of the track, the Brisbane musician says, “It was written in four hours. [Producer] Ed and I were tired and hungover, which maybe explains why it sounds a little dark. The guitar synth was added at the last minute but I can’t imagine the song without it now”.

3. Shannen James – Arrows

Shannen has supported artists such as G Flip, Men I Trust, CLEWS & more. Check out her new clip!

4. CXLOE – 12 Steps

12 Steps is about addiction. Addiction runs in my family and I’ve always wanted to tell my story in a way that felt comfortable to me and those around me,” CXLOE explains. She has pledged her first week of sales to Lifeline.

5. Kristina Train – We the People

Originally produced in Nashville in Dec 2019 by Bill Reynolds (Avett Brothers/Band Of Horses) and mastered by John Baldwin (Sly Stone, Neil Young), Train’s band includes co-writer Paul Olsen on guitar, and a cast of musicians from across the genre spectrum from including members of Donna the Buffalo and Milk Carton Kids.

6. Josh Pyke – You’re My Colour

The Australian storyteller has given us another taste of his new album, Rome, out on August 28th.

7. Joesef – I Wonder Why ft. Loyle Carner

The Glaswegian artist says, “I never work with anyone at all, but my mates and I are Loyle’s biggest fans so it was a real dream come true to be able to hear him on a song I’d made, and to hear his lyrics and how he interpreted it in his own way.”

8. Outer Stella Overdrive – Bad Times

Check out the London band’s new video, which was directed by Sadie Frost.

9. Sir Winston – Hollywood Hills

This was self-produced and recorded in Brooklyn New York with studio master Abe Seiferth (RAC, Car Seat Headrest, Yeasayer).

10. FVLCRVM – Hate List

The fast rising Slovakian DJ/producer/musician returns with a new track, lifted from his brand new EP, Attentioncore.
