Interview: Getting to know MINIQ
NSW Central Coast-based indie-rock duo MINIQ have just unveiled their new single, Space Cowboy. We asked them to tell us about themselves:
We are… MINIQ, both very different yet so similar at the same time (Belle and Dom). During our late teens/the early twenties, our sisterly bond disintegrated for a while there. Guess we were both on our journeys experiencing life lessons, BUT music and surfing have turned things around. These two passions/interests have made us reconnect, and
it’s so special to be able to share these passions.
Space Cowboy is… the story of how I met my boyfriend. After escaping a pretty toxic relationship, I was done with boys and dating. With no intention, I met this Space Cowboy who swept me off my feet. Space Cowboy was quite literally his nickname; he would always get loose and wander around at parties. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but now two
years later and we’re pretty damn strong. Space Cowboy is that first step into our incredible journey.
Home is… and always will be the Central Coast or at least Australia. Whenever I’ve come back from overseas, it’s ever made me realise how much I appreciate the place I’ve had the privilege of growing up in. Then again, I want to say that home is definitely where the heart is as well. I want to travel the world, and I think as long as you’re happy doing what you’re doing and are surrounded by good company, you’ll always feel a sense of home and security wherever you might be around the globe.
I spend too much time… never just trying to do one thing but trying to cram in a whole lot of things into my day. There are not enough hours in a day for me.
I feel like I spend too much time… working in the office and not enough time practising or getting out in the water. But every time I do, I realise how much I’ve needed it because it soothes me.
I’ve never… taken anything for granted or regretted the past. We are strong believers that everything happens for a reason, mistakes are mistakes, and we are designed to learn and improve.
It might surprise you to learn that… we listen to more male artists than females. I just find their vocals are just always smoother and easier on the ear. I try to sing a lot cleaner now, with less vibrato or shakiness in my voice. Also, some people are surprised to know that Belle always wanted to be a veterinarian growing up. She’s also looked into landscaping, and the fireys as well. What brought her into the music world was simply Dom asking her if she’d be keen to start a band. Belle said yes, and the rest is history.
