Something You Said’s top songs of 2020

There have been some absolutely amazing songs released this year. Here’s our top ten, as voted for by the Something You Said team. Enjoy!

1. ALEX THE ASTRONAUT – I THINK YOU’RE GREAT

With I Think You’re Great, Alex Lynn highlights the importance of checking in on and supporting the people around you through thick and thin. Given how this year played out, it’s little wonder the song has become our 2020 anthem. The track is lifted from Alex’s debut album, The Theory of Absolutely Nothing, which just came in at number 2 in our end of year poll. Safe to say that we think Alex the Astronaut is great!

2. CLOVER BLUE – CAKE

This debut single from the Melbourne artist came at us from nowhere in September and hasn’t left our brains or our hearts since. It explores the deflation of casual separation, grappling with the realities of romantic boundaries and blind-spot desires. You can read our interview with Clover Blue here.

3. ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER – CARS IN SPACE

This was the first taste of new music from the Melbourne outfit since their 2018 debut album, and pointed towards the kind of brilliance we could expect from their sophomore record, Sideways To New Italy.

4. JIM BOB – JO’S GOT PAPERCUTS

“Jo knows it is what it is now / She knows she can’t dance to The Smiths now,” sings Jim Bob in this brilliantly observed tale of resilience and compassion in an increasingly fragmented and broken world.

5. GORDI – EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

This single is lifted from Our Two Skins, Gordi’s second album. “For all the turmoil and anguish described in the record, this song just sits in pure joy. I like the idea that the ultimate gesture of love is to make someone feel exceptional; like they deserve an extraordinary life,” she explains.

6. JULIA STONE – DANCE

It’s been eight long years since Julia Stone released a solo album, so we simply cannot wait to hear her upcoming record, Sixty Summers. In the build-up to it, she’s dropped three superb singles, including Dance, which features Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon in its video.

7. ROMY – LIFETIME

The debut solo release from Romy Madley-Croft of the xx is about the dream of being reunited with friends, family and the ones we love, capturing the euphoria of being together again.

8. CARDI B – WAP FEAT MEGAN THEE STALLION

300 million views on Youtube and counting… suffice to say the internet was well and truly broken by this paean to sexuality.

9. THE CRIBS – RUNNING INTO YOU

This was the lead single from Night Network, the Wakefield band’s superb eighth studio album.

10. TILLY VW – YOUNG LOVERS DO

The Melbourne-based musician told us that her beautiful debut single is “a safe space for the army of idiots in love to gather and laugh at themselves.” You can read our interview with her here.
