Getting to know Clover Blue

Melbourne-based artist Clover Blue has recently dropped her debut single. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Clover Blue (and luckily for me, that IS my real name. Thanks mum!). I’m a proud Palawa individual who’s studying and making music (and staying home!) in Naarm (Melbourne).

Cake is… my debut single. It was the first song that really seemed to fall out of me, and I wrote it in a two-day period directly following the end of the summer fling that it’s about. It’s basically me trying to be honest to myself (and everyone else) about how I feel (felt), while Kate Bush unknowingly holds my hand. I don’t think I realised it would emotionally resonate with other people when I was writing it, but at this point I really agree with what I said the first time I played it live (just before lockdown) – it’s about whoever you think about when you hear it.

Home is… wherever you make it I think. I moved around quite a lot while I was growing up, so I think home is more a feeling than a place for sure. My family live in Brisbane, I live in Melbourne in a sharehouse with friends. I think home is anywhere you build a nest.

I spend too much time… sitting inside. Being forced to stay home has really made me realise that I love being outside. I love to go for walks and listen to music by myself. I spend too much time being stagnant and I want to use my hands to do things a lot more than I do (turns out I’m a tactile person! Who would’ve guessed?).

I’ve never… gotten a real tattoo despite having 7 tattoos. They are all home-done stick and pokes, and therefore mostly ‘abstract’.

It might surprise people to learn that… I bartered the production of ‘Cake’ out of Bailey Judd (who did everything but the drums and vocals). He’s a good friend, so I help him out with his PR (poorly) and in return he makes the magic happen for Clover Blue. You can get almost anything with exchange, I think.

In the future (that I have kind of stopped planning for)… I’m hopefully starting my Masters in Arts and Cultural Management next year, and am thinking about heading towards film distribution work. But! I do hope to knock out some more music. Very keen to do some more collaborative work when we’re let out again.

Keep up to date with Clover Blue on Insta.
